The 17 megadiverse countries

Just 17 countries hold about 70% of the world’s biodiversity. Scientists call them the megadiverse countries. All 17 are on the map: Australia, Brazil, China, Colombia, DR Congo, Ecuador, India, Indonesia, Madagascar, Malaysia, Mexico, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Philippines, South Africa, USA, Venezuela.

Many of them sit in the tropics, where rainforests and coral reefs pack in the most species. Try the Rainforest layers or the Coral reef explorer to see why.

How to use the world animal map

  • Zoom in with the + button, a pinch or the mouse wheel. More animals appear as you zoom.
