Meet the purple-bibbed whitetip! (Urosticte benjamini) A cute and very small hummingbird found in humid montane forests of Colombia and Ecuador. Males are known for their striking violet gorget, while females have more subdued coloring. The Red-legged Honeycreeper (Cyanerpes cyaneus) and th Bananaquit (Coereba flaveola). Another beautiful hornbill, this is the Knobbed Hornbill (Rhyticeros cassidix), photographed in Tangkoko Nature Reserve, Sulawesi, Indonesia. Easily recognised by its vivid plumage and the large red casque above its bright yellow beak. Its casque, made of keratin, is thought to aid in sound amplification and may play a role in courtship displays. Everyone gets thirsty on a sunny day, even this Ocellated Lizard (Timon lepidus). It is native to the western Mediterranean, especially the Iberian Peninsula and southern France—it gleams green with blue “ocelli” spots. In open scrub and oak woodland it hunts insects and small vertebrates, but also eats fruit, helping disperse seeds across dry landscapes. A sun-loving sentinel of Mediterranean hillsides. It is the Spot-billed Toucanet (Selenidera maculirostris), photo in Mata Atlântica by @robinjamesnaturephoto The Rufous Sibia (Heterophasia capistrata) - A native to the Himalayan foothills from Nepal to NE India! it flashes warm rufous tones, a black cap, and a long tail. In oak–rhododendron forests it sips nectar, snaps insects, and eats berries—often joining mixed flocks—helping pollinate flowers and spread seeds. A bright voice in the misty hills. This is the Green-bearded Helmetcrest (Oxypogon guerinii). Endemic to Colombia’s eastern Andes, it lives in the high páramo and Polylepis edges between ~3,000–4,200 m. Males show the namesake green “beard” and a spiky crest, feeding on nectar from high-Andean flowers and snapping tiny insects for protein, a specialist built for thin air. Meet the Pygmy Marmoset (Cebuella pygmaea)!
